INVESTIGATING CORRELATION-BASED FINGERPRINT AUTHENTICATION SCHEMES FOR MOBILE DEVICES

Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement

ABSTRACT

This paper investigates correlation-based fingerprint authentication schemes that can be used for mobile devices. Mobile handheld device is a popular device that provides secure, private, authentic, and accurate communication and exchange of confidential information. In this paper we propose a technique to solve the authenticity problem mobile communication. This technique is mainly based on the usage of the Fingerprint. And With the advancement of mobile technology, mobile phones can store significant amount of sensitive and private information. The security issue of mobile phones becomes an important field to investigate.

The correlation based fingerprint verification system first selects appropriate
templates in the primary fingerprint, uses template matching to locate them in the secondary print, and compares the template positions of both fingerprints. Unlike minutiae -based systems, the correlation-based fingerprint verification system is capable of dealing with bad quality images from which no minutiae can be extracted reliably and with fingerprints that suffer from non-uniform shape distortions. Experiments have shown that the performance of this system at the moment is comparable to the performance of many other fingerprint verification systems.

The investigated algorithms were implemented with a J2MEenvironment on the application layer. In order to reduce there sources demanded for the mobile device environment, we also propose a new hierarchical correlation-based scheme based on the idea that the overall authentication can be decomposed into partial autocorrelations. The algorithms have been tested on a J2ME CDC 1.0 emulator of a smart mobile phone.
